In the era of Industry 4.0, manual goods management using logbooks or even traditional barcodes is gradually revealing limitations regarding speed and storage capacity. To solve this problem, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology was born, creating a significant turning point. So, what is an RFID label, and why is it considered the future of supply chain management?
1. What is an RFID Label?
RFID Labels (also known as chip labels, RFID tags, or smart labels) are types of adhesive labels with an integrated microchip and a tiny antenna inside. Unlike barcodes, which require a scanner to “see” them directly to read, RFID labels use radio waves to automatically transmit data to a reading device (RFID Reader) without needing direct contact or line-of-sight.
Each RFID chip contains a Unique Identifier (UID) and can store additional information about the product (production date, lot number, expiration date, etc.).

2. Structure of an RFID Label
From the outside, an RFID label may look like a standard paper label, but inside, it consists of three main components (collectively called an RFID Inlay):
Integrated Circuit (IC): The “brain” of the label, used to store data and process information.
Antenna: The “arm” that transmits and receives waves, harvesting energy from the reader to activate the chip and transmit data.
Substrate: The material (paper, PET plastic, PVC) that holds the chip and antenna in place, allowing for printing information like text and logos on the surface.

3. Classification of RFID Labels by Frequency
Depending on the intended use, RFID labels are divided into three main frequency bands:
Low Frequency (LF): Short reading distance (a few cm). Often used for time attendance, elevator keycards, and livestock management.
High Frequency (HF): Reading distance from 10cm to 1m. The most common is NFC technology, used for payments, libraries, and electronic tickets.
Ultra High Frequency (UHF): This is the most popular type in logistics and retail management. It offers a long reading distance (from 3m to 10m or more) and extremely fast reading speeds, allowing for bulk inventory scanning.
4. Efficiency Comparison: Barcode vs. RFID in Warehouse Management
Compared to traditional Barcodes, RFID labels offer superior advantages:
| Feature | Barcode | RFID Label |
| Reading Method | Requires direct Line-of-sight | No line-of-sight needed; reads through obstacles (cartons, wood…) |
| Speed | Scans items one by one | Scans hundreds of items simultaneously in seconds |
| Distance | Short (a few dozen cm) | Long (up to 10-15m with UHF) |
| Data | Read-only, cannot be edited | Read/Write, information can be updated |
| Durability | Easily damaged, faded, or torn | Withstands harsh environments better |

5. Real-World Applications of RFID Labels
Thanks to precise identification capabilities and high speed, RFID is being widely applied across many industries:

Logistics and Warehouse Management
Automated inventory checks in minutes instead of days.
Absolutely accurate tracking of goods movement (Inbound/Outbound).
Reduction of goods loss/shrinkage.
Retail Industry
RFID labels on clothes and shoes enable self-checkout without cashiers scanning each item.
Combines Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) anti-theft features directly on the label.
Rapid in-store inventory checks.

Asset Management
Tracking machinery, equipment, and fixed assets in offices, hospitals, and factories.
Managing maintenance and servicing of equipment via history recorded on the chip.
Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals
Managing medical records and patient wristbands.
Tracking the origin of drugs, limiting counterfeit medications.
Future Trends
Using RFID labels is not just a trend but is becoming a mandatory standard in the global supply chain (successfully applied by giants like Walmart, Uniqlo, and Decathlon). Investing in RFID labels helps businesses make information transparent, optimize personnel costs, and enhance the customer experience.
At Vietlabel, we provide smart label solutions and UHF/HF RFID labels suitable for all enterprise warehousing and retail management needs.
